California-Friendly Landscape Design
While the design process may vary depending on the scope of the project, most design projects will include the following services:
Initial Consultation - We meet with you via phone or at the site. You provide us with your design criteria, project desires and a rough budget. Site conditions are analyzed such as property lines, building footprint, climate conditions, soil type, drainage and general topography. We provide a proposal for the design services needed. No charge and no obligations.
Concept Plan(s) - The Conceptual Landscape Plan essentially puts our ideas onto paper. Sometimes having 2 or 3 different options is helpful if more than just planting is involved. The Concept Plan includes the suggested garden layout(s) and includes plant and tree locations, walkway and patio layouts, suggested material types, noted landscape features and garden elements in plan view. Concepts are typically hand-drawn over a computer-drafted Site Plan and are drawn to scale. The Concept Plan shall be in keeping with your wish list and your budget so that you don't come to find out later that it will cost twice as much to install than you expected! Images such as photographs and magazine clippings that represent the overall theme may be presented as well. We will meet to review the plans or we can email you the plans and we can discuss over the phone.
Nursery Visit – This is a great time to meet at a nursery and look at plant options as well as pottery and landscape elements. A visit to a local building supply may also be helpful to see demonstrations of certain hardscape materials (stone, pavers, brick, etc.) and other landscape features. This time is completely optional but is extremely beneficial.
Planting Plan – A Planting Plan includes the specific locations, sizes and quantities of determined plants and trees.
Hardscape Plan - A Hardscape Plan includes material specifications and supplier information for walkways and patios as applicable. It includes plan views, descriptions and dimensions of structures such as a pergola, fireplace, wall fountain or barbecue, and specific construction details as necessary. This plan is specific enough to produce an accurate estimate for installation and obtain construction permits if applicable.
Irrigation Plan – Due to current drought conditions and stringent water regulations in California, irrigation is a crucial part of the California-friendly landscape process. Fortunately, the irrigation industry has made tremendous progress with efficient irrigation methods and equipment. Depending on who is performing the installation and how complex the planting arrangements are, a professional irrigation plan may or may not be required, however it is always recommended. If landscape renovations are being submitted to the city for approval, a certified irrigation plan indicating applicable water conservation methods will be required under certain circumstances provided in recent state legislation (CA Assembly Bill 1881).
