This 12-unit apartment complex near downtown Norwalk is owned and operated by BMH, Inc. of Lomita, CA. BMH owner Brad Sherman was interested in reducing water use and maintenance costs for the property. We removed 1,600 square feet of lawn, added four beautiful, low-water trees (Palo Verde 'Desert Museum' and Argentine Mesquite), and a variety of low-water shrubs, including Westringea 'Morning Light', Salvia 'Santa Barbara', Leonotus Lions Tail, Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails' and 'Pink Joey' Kangaroo Paw. Carex tumulicola (Berkeley sedge) and Dymondia were planted in the parkway strip. Trees and shrubs were grown by Norman's Nursery. The entire landscape is irrigated by drip line and covered with several inches of forest mulch to keep roots cool and soil moist while conserving water. Children arriving home from school were delighted to notice our first hummingbird within an hour after the planting was complete!
