It is the actual direction along the earth's surface towards the geographic North Pole, as opposed to magnetic north or 'project north'. As landscape designers, we must consider the direction and angles of the sun throughout the day and during the different seasons of the year.
'True North' also represents our belief in the one and only True God, Jesus Christ. Our business is founded on our faith in Jesus and the Hope of His Truth!
Our Story: True North was started in 2008 by owners Zeke and Lisa Sevier. Raised in the rolling countrysides of Sonoma County, California, Zeke and Lisa developed a deep appreciation for the beauty and importance of natural landscapes & open spaces. Zeke has had many opportunities to study the diverse cultures and landscapes of the world through travels to Europe, Australia, Japan and Indonesia. Lisa has a keen appreciation for design and fine art, which is complimented by her love of nature and a passion for helping others enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Together, they enjoy a simple lifestyle with their five children, Nicholas, Kate, Claire, Charlie and Bennett.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Arizona in 1997, Zeke had the opportunity to travel through South America, documenting the diverse environments and natural resources of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
Prior to starting True North, he spent over 10 years working in the environmental and geotechnical (soils) engineering industry, focusing primarily in residential and commercial real estate markets. As a project manager with LGC Geotechnical (2001-2007), Zeke developed a knowledge of the various geologic conditions of California and their effects on the built environment. The impacts of varying soil and water conditions on landscape elements such as pools, paving, walls and freestanding structures became a focus of his career and the study of sound and efficient landscape design principles became a passion.
In 2006, Zeke decided to pursue his passion for architecture and horticulture by enrolling in the Ornamental Horticulture certificate program at Orange Coast College as well as a self-guided study of environmental landscape design and water-wise irrigation methods.
This lead to a fulfilling position as the Landscape Construction Manager for the Custom Development Department of Laing Luxury Homes in Newport Beach, CA. This opportunity provided hands-on experience in all aspects of landscape development, including design to suit the customer's needs, budget and schedule.
Zeke has since developed a vast knowledge of landscape materials, ornamental and edible plants and trees, water use, and an appreciation of California-friendly design. Of course, he will be the first to admit, there is always much to be learned!
True North Landscape Design is the result of our passion for environmentally-sound landscape planning combined with our desire to share that passion with others.
